Early on the morning of April 6, 2008, a panel of judges met to review and discuss the recorded auditions of applicants for the 2008 PianoArts National Competition. The atmosphere was welcoming and supportive, though professional and focused. Judges provided in-depth constructive commentary on each piece to be sent back to each applicant.
The deciding preliminary panel included Eun-Joo Kwak of Cardinal Stritch University, Renato Premezzi of Beloit College, and Eugene Alcalay of UW-Platteville. Margaret Otwell of UW-Milwaukee and Mt. Mary College was the non-voting advisory judge.
Due to the raised requirements this year, including a full concerto with Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra for one winner, noticeably less applications were received. Fortunately, all applicants are fine young musicians, and the the jury painstakingly selected ten for the semi-final round this June.
